On the third regular PAYSAGE D'HIVER album "Die Berge" ('The Mountains'), mastermind Wintherr has perfectly captured the dark essence of his mountainous Swiss home beyond those pretty picture postcard landscapes. Ragged peaks that unfathomable tectonic forces have crushed upwards and out of the thin cold crust of this planet create a harsh and hostile environment for humans, which is reflected within the sound of raw black metal. Note for note, these grey giants of rock come awake to life in song. Majestic, powerful, dangerous, threatening, and yet also inherent of a fierce beauty, these massive tracks of epic length echo the huge proportions of their source of inspiration and amount to a playing time of more than 100 minutes. With each release, PAYSAGE D'HIVER narrate a new chapter of a continuing story about a mysterious protagonist called 'Der Wanderer'. "Die Berge" takes the wanderer into the 14th chapter, which might end up as his last. The main theme of "Die Berge" is death and this time the enigmatic wanderer's journey is comparable to that of a Zen monk who hikes to the peak of a mountain on feeling that his time has come. Founded in 1997 in the Swiss region of Bern, PAYSAGE D'HIVER remained a strictly underground phenomenon at first. Wintherr unleashed a steady stream of 10 full-length "demos" and 4 split-EPs that earned him an excellent reputation while a massive following grew by word of mouth. When the Swiss came "out of hiding" with "Im Wald" ("In the Forest") in 2020, their regular debut album even entered the German charts, which meant mainstream recognition despite standing firmly with both feet in the underground. With "Die Berge", PAYSAGE D'HIVER continue to expand the horizon of Nordic black metal without ever stepping away from their roots.

"Schnee" ("snow") is omnipresent in the works of Swiss black metal artist Wintherr a.k.a. Paysage D'Hiver and turned into a four-part song cycle, released piece by piece on the compilation LP "Wurzelgeister" ('Schnee II', 2002) and on split records with Vinterriket ('Schnee I', 2003), Nordlicht and Drudkh ('Schnee III' and 'Schnee IV', 2017).
All four tracks - created within a time span of almost 20 years and dealing with different facets of the frozen element - are now available together for the first time ever. They have been partly remixed and wholly remastered specially for this release.

MOIRAI specialise in the musical treasures of the middle ages with a focus on what has been lost in time, long before current notation systems came into use and of which only tantalising glimpses remain. The unique trio use original written sources and oral traditions, which they artistically interpret and respectfully recombine.
"Blood Treasure, Woven Fates" is a fascinating case in point. On their new album, MOIRAI bring an ancient story back to life that they have extracted from Old Icelandic manuscripts and perform in the original language. On eight of the ten album tracks they sing of the hero Sigurd, who kills the dragon Fafnir and wins a cursed treasure of red gold. They also sing of a bitter feud between two powerful women, Brynhild and Gudrún, and deadly intrigues at the Burgundian court that finally lead to three kings meeting their terrible fate in the halls of Atli, king of the Huns.
With the first and the last track, MOIRAI embed their tale in a frame built from lines taken from the prophetic Old Norse poem 'Völuspá' ("The Prophecy of the Seeress"). Yet while "Blood Treasure, Woven Fates" is firmly rooted in Old Icelandic language and literature, the trio takes a much wider perspective. The story of Sigurd is derived from much older Germanic sources that also inspired the Middle High German epic "The Song of the Nibelungs". This poem was written down around the year 1200, and is therefore nearly contemporary with the 13th century Icelandic manuscript Codex Regius that MOIRAI went to study in Reykjavik in preparation of this album.
While in Iceland, MOIRAI also studied the later Icelandic rímur type of poetry that probably began in the 14th century and last until the early modern period – and even underwent a modern revival in popular music. In a parallel to the story of the dragon slayer Sigurd told in Iceland and under the name Siegfried in continental Europe at the same time, MOIRAI created a musical reflection of these cultural connections by blending melodies and patterns from the rímur tradition with the monophonic song that became popular in Europe during the 13th century. This process laid down the foundation of "Blood Treasure, Woven Fates".
MOIRAI were conceived as an American-Swiss duo creating songs in the context of "Alte Musik" ("old music"). The beautiful voices of Hanna Marti and Mara Winter are combined with a sparing yet very effective use of acoustic instrumentation. In addition to their singing, Hanna plays lyre and Mara the flute, which she also does in a recently begun residential role in SANGRE DE MUERDAGO. They expanded to a trio when French musician Félix Verry joined and brought his subtle fiddle playing to the group. Mara Winter was formerly the vocalist and keyboard player in the Cascadian black metal band EIGENLICHT, before moving from Olympia, USA to the Swiss city of Basel (CH) to form MOIRAI with Hanna Marti in October 2015. Hanna performs frequently with the legendary medieval music ensemble SEQUENTIA. Félix and Mara also released three albums together as the experimental dungeon synth duo URGHUN.
With "Blood Treasure, Woven Fates", MOIRAI take us on a captivating journey through Germanic space and time. The epic tale of the hero Sigurd might go back as far as the migration period, which began with the Huns pushing Germanic tribes into the territories of the late Roman Empire, which was already weakened by internal strife until it fell. Whatever his original story was, it got reshaped again and again through the centuries until a version of it reached the North at the latest by the time of the Viking expansions, and finally was written down by Christian monks in the medieval period. In their musical retelling "Blood Treasure, Woven Fates", MOIRAI join the present with an age of dragons, swords, old gods, valkyries, and heroes through their exciting recital of Old Norse literary monuments – and let us experience ancient emotions that are otherwise hidden by the veils of time.

NORDGEIST were conceived in the Siberian city of Bratsk in the Irkutsk Oblast at the junction of the rivers Oka and the mighty Angara. This territory once belonged to the nomadic Buryat people, who are related to the Mongolians and renowned for their close relationship to nature. Bratsk lies in the subarctic climate zone, which results in dark, long cold winters.

It is therefore quite easy to see, where T, the mysterious mastermind and musician behind NORDGEIST took inspiration from. Her approach to black metal is obviously shaped by the Nordic scene, with which T's music shares a penchant for majestic melodies and cineastic soundscapes, but also delivers an extra dose of viscious fury.

Founded in 2017, NORDGEIST caused an immediate stir in the black underground with the split-release "Nordwinter", which they shared with VINTERKULT.

Now NORDGEIST unleash their ice-crowned album debut "Frostwinter", which will hit the world like a black blizzard from Siberia.

Each full-length release, including the so-called "demos" and regular albums, constitutes a chapter of a continuing story, which PAYSAGE D'HIVER narrate about a protagonist called "Der Wanderer", who roams an otherworld realm. In "Geister", the Wanderer has a lucid dream in which he meets beings from another dimension, which is in fact our world. To him, we terrestrials appear as the ghosts. Our only means of contacting the Wanderer in the world of PAYSAGE D'HIVER is through the rites of winter, such as the Tschäggättä, which is a traditional mask cult from the Lötschental, a valley in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. Such a hereditary mask is depicted on the album cover and the lyrics are set in the local dialect.

Most people probably associate the city of Florence in the sun-flooded central Italiany Tuscany region with the birth of the Renaissance and a cornucopia of masterpieces by such artistic titans as Dante Alighieri, Giovanni Boccaccio, Francesco Guicciardini, and Niccolò Machiavelli.

Yet one of the city's contemporary musical progenies is rather drawn towards the opposite of light and summer landscapes. When Stefano Senesi inaugurated his minimalistic dark ambient outlet WINTERBLOOD with the release of his debut full-length "Le fredde ali dell'inverno" in 2008, both, his project's name and the album title that translates as "The Cold Wings of Winter"‎, demonstratively pointed towards one of his favoured artistic sujets. In his stunning catalogue of currently 29 albums, the Italian has returned time and time again to rather nordic themes revolving around the cold season, but also other left-hand topics such as darkness, loneliness, magic, and forests.

With the 2019 digital release, "Finsternis", Stefano Senesi has most successfully evoked the eponymous darkness of its German title and frozen cineastic soundscapes delivered in his typical, minimalistic style that has been aptly dubbed "polar ambient" to such a degree that it has caused a continuous demand from the Italian's following for a physical release ever since this album came out. Kunsthall now gladly heeds the call and proudly presents WINTERBLOOD's "Finsternis" in a beautiful black and silver gatefold double-album edition on black vinyl.

Paysage D'Hiver's double album "Im Wald" was recently released and immediately became a favorite among both fans and critics. Now Wintherr offers us an addendum in the shape of the EP "Im Traum", which contains two album songs as re-imagined versions.

"In my inner ear," the Swiss artist explains, "I heard deeper levels of music when recording 'Le Rêve Lucide' and 'Kaelteschauer', which are not possible to include in the limited physical audio spectrum, as it often happens with Paysage D'Hiver. So these two tracks, wherein it seemed particularly clear and intense to me, are a realization of these deeper levels for the first time."

"Im Traum" is available as limited 10" and A5 Digibook MCD.

Paysage D'Hiver are a phenomenon within the black metal genre. Wintherr, the Swiss project's sole and solitary member, has released ten albums and several splits within 20-plus years, all of which became underground successes and sought-after items while he kept mostly to himself, feeling no need to go public.

Uninterested in flocking to the herd, the artist and his craft remain an enigma that never fails to surprise … which rings especially true with regards to his first full-length since 2013: "Im Wald" ("in the forest"), a monochromatic epic in the truest sense of the word.

With 120 minutes playing time, "Im Wald" is not only Paysage D’Hiver's longest effort so far but also another chapter in the tale of winter travel (thus the French name Paysage D'Hiver) that runs through the project’s entire work like the proverbial golden thread. In the context of his highly detailed narrative, Wintherr locates it after "Steineiche" and "Schattengang" (both 1998) which describe the beginning of the travel, and before "Das Tor" (2013), "Kerker" (1999) and "Die Festung" (1998), which are set at the end.

"Im Wald" is available as limited and hand-numbered 2MC (ltd. 300), 2CD (ltd. 500) and 4LP (ltd. 500) wooden box sets (all incl. 20-page booklet and poster) as well as non-limited 4LP box set (also incl. 20-page booklet and poster) and 2CD Digipak with 20-page booklet in black envelope. All products have been assembled by hand.

Whereas the two tracks are also available on the 2CD edition of the Lunar Aurora split with Paysage d’Hiver, they are also available separately in a limited run of 300 numbered LP copies with hand-crafted packaging and regular LP (no limitation).
