The beautiful chrysanthemum in its humble white form is also known as the cemetery flower as it is often used to adorn graves for its longevity. For BLACK NAIL CABARET, the chrysanthemum's blossom paves the way for our own deathbed portraits. We know that the grim reaper will come to us all and bring the end, which turns us into fear-filled jars. Our jar could be filled with so many other things but fear permeates all. The eponymous "Chrysanthemum" of the Hungarian pop noire duo's sixth album symbolises an uprising against that but also acceptance. Although BLACK NAIL CABARET remain true to their marked penchant for sexually explicit provocation, the primal, subconscious fear of death that triggers emotions, anxiety, and the fear of letting go is also a red thread running through the album that is metaphorically named "Chrysanthemum". The eroticism of the Hungarians has always avoided cheap clichés. Instead the duo artistically depicts their living BDSM reality, which is framed by high aesthetic standards. Musically, BLACK NAIL CABARET have brought their outstanding songwriting abilities closer to perfection. On "Chrysanthemum", the duo is seemingly effortless blending dark electronic sounds with pop noire elements. Their talent to write songs that can stand on their own and do not rely on electronic trickery has set BLACK NAIL CABARET apart from their peers. At the latest on their self-released full-length "Pseudopop" (2018), the Hungarians had successfully fused art, pop, dark harmonies, and powerful electronics. BLACK NAIL CABARET continued to hit the international scene with their fifth album "Gods Verging on Sanity" in 2020. The duo's excellent reputation rapidly spread through word of mouth even though the global pandemic enforced severe limitations upon them. Now the stars have all aligned, and BLACK NAIL CABARET are ready to take on the world with a dark soundtrack of life's glory that is symbolised by a shiny white flower of seeming innocence that at closer inspection also carries all the eternal might of death in its scent: "Chrysanthemum".
The new BLACK NAIL CABARET album "Woodland Memoirs" is deliberately designed as a very different beauty from all the Hungarian avant-garde synth pop duo's previous releases. The thrilling outcome of their musing upon the nature of electronic and analogue music that the Hungarians engaged in is a one-off experiment for which BLACK NAIL CABARET enlisted the help of close musician friends: guitarist Tamás Számvéber, saxophone player Márton Barják, a former member of Hungarian ska act CsizmáSKAndúr, and Péter Laskay on drums. Under the moniker BLACK NAIL CABARET AND FRIENDS, the Hungarians release a stunning full-length that is in many ways a part of their musical cosmos but at the same time an exciting side-project branching off from their regular works into an unexplored dimension. BLACK NAIL CABARET hand-picked a total of eleven tracks from each of their previous releases. Those were transformed into BLACK NAIL CABARET AND FRIENDS songs by adding guitars, drums, and saxophone in a semi-live recording process that left room for improvisation and went with the flow. In order to stress the organic character of their own 'cover versions', the band added beautiful footage recorded in the pine woods at the Agostyán Arboretum, Hungary. When BLACK NAIL CABARET emerged onto the international scene with their sophomore album "Gods Verging on Sanity" in 2020, the duo managed to rapidly spread their excellent reputation mainly through word of mouth despite the limitations enforced upon them by the global pandemic. At the time, BLACK NAIL CABARET had already left an impressive mark upon the electronic music scene of their native Hungary with the self-released debut full-length "Pseudopop" (2018) that successfully fused art, pop, dark harmonies and powerful electronics. From the start, BLACK NAIL CABARET are marked by a penchant for sexually explicit provocation. While the Hungarians avoid embarrassing cheap clichés, they artistically depict their living BDSM reality, which is framed by high aesthetic standards. With "Woodland Memoirs", BLACK NAIL CABARET AND FRIENDS share a singular musical experiment with the world that has beautifully gone even far better than expected by happily transgressing genre and style and opening their music to ears both in and beyond the world of electronic sound.
BLACK NAIL CABARET have set a musical exclamation mark with their current album "Gods Verging on Sanity" (2020). Despite their planned touring fell victim to the general circumstances, the duo has emerged even stronger from the last two years mainly through rapidly spreading word of mouth.

Their continued growth provides an excellent opportunity to let an early jewel from the band's back catalogue history shine in new splendour: When singer Emèse Árvai-Illes and Krisztián Árvai on keyboards self-released the album "Pseudopop" on their own Dichronaut Records label in 2018, the duo had already successfully fused art, pop, dark harmonies and exciting electronics. Hungarian journalist Mariusz Bari (Planet Damage) awarded the highest score (10)/10 and wrote: "BLACK NAIL CABARET has always been on a journey to perfect itself and this latest album is the perfect proof that they have not lost neither touch, nor control."

What sets BLACK NAIL CABARET remarkably apart from other bands of their genre is a penchant for sexually explicit provocation. The Hungarians not only managed to stay far away from being embarrassing or aiming for cheap thrills, but artistically depict their living BDSM reality framed by high aesthetic standards. Those who prefer to see a frog in the Rohrschach blobs on the album cover should perhaps dare to take a closer look.

In the duo's own words, it sounds like this: "'Pseudopop' is a summary of all the music that had a huge impact on our lives", wrote BLACK NAIL CABARET. "Regardless of style, we just emptied our minds, dropped genres, and let loose. It is a nice hybrid born out of the chaos within both of us and we like to think that our music is avant-garde contemporary pop with dark alternative roots."

On its initial release, "Pseudopop" came with nearly all the ingredients needed for greatness. The only item missing was a label with international outreach. Now the album will finally received the well deserved worldwide attention through a careful re-mastered reissue including a bonus track released by Dependent. Let the spotlight shine on BLACK NAIL CABARET and "Pseudopop".
Hungarian dark electronic pop duo Black Nail Cabaret embark into the 2020s with a head start: They have signed to Dependent Records and gained the support slot for Norwegian icons Covenant’s Fieldworks 2020 spring tour, which will surely give them another boost thanks to their impressive live qualities. On May 8th then, their new album Gods Verging On Sanity come out.

There is more to Black Nail Cabaret than perfect timing and eye-catching performances, namely a strong thematic backbone as mirrored in the album concept:

“It is the year 2020, and gods are verging On sanity. They are us, humans.

We are gods, with an anus. We contemplate our place in the world, the meaning of our death. We find and create beauty, and yet we eat, defecate and reproduce like any other animal on this planet. We are existential organisms, and our minds struggle with this duality. We fight against our own mortality in different ways – some with procreation, some with art, some with power, and some just don’t fight at all.

How far have we come and where do we go from here? How do we shed the old skin now that the new one is growing underneath?”

Black Nail Cabaret combine music and art with poetry, costumes and BDSM eroticism. There are sexual references everywhere, but always with a dark twist and connection to existentialism – the dark side of humanity, which is also one of the main aspects of Gods Verging On Sanity.
Singer Emese Arvai-Illes started out as a performer in a fetish horror theatre group in Budapest but quickly found programmer, producer and partner Kristzian Arvai to be her musical counterpart. Black Nail Cabaret fuse darkness with light, beauty with violence and disturbing art with lush harmonies. Modern electronic sequences meet a distinct 1980s influence from boundary-pushing female acts like Grace Jones or Eurythmics. Tradition blended with new visions makes Gods Verging On Sanity one of the most exciting new entries into this young musical decade.

The album is released as six-page Digipak CD and limited 180g vinyl.
